F/town to have women soccer league

The interim chairperson of the envisaged league, Desmond Dabilani Jenamo told Mmegi Sport this week that they are determined to make the competition a success. He said the interim committee has been courting potential sponsors to come on board and promote women football in the northern part of the country. He is confident that they will get sponsors for the league.

Several clubs have shown interest in participating in the league with seven already registered to take part. The registered ones are Francistown United, Amigoes, Ladies Focus, Holy Ghost, Glantine Girls, Coloured Stars and Reteng Banyana.

Jenamo said the clubs have shown commitment to the cause. He said the league could have started in August this year but this was not possible due to financial constraints and logistical hiccups. “The league will start in February next year. We want the teams to register players during the January transfer window,” he said.

Francistown Regional Football Association (FRAFA) chairperson, Jonas Ikgopoleng has expressed delight about the women’s league.

“It is a good development for our football as a whole,” he said. He stated that his association has been pursuing the establishment of the women’s league for a long time but without success.

Ikgopoleng expressed optimism in the Jenamo-chaired interim committee saying that it is committed. Due to financial constraints, he said teams will be playing at regional level until the game gains momentum and support from the business community.

Through the establishment of a sound women soccer league, Ikgopoleng said creation of an economic model that is sustainable for women is possible. Women teams in Gaborone and most of the southern part of Botswana have been participating in a league for sometime now.
