F/town club introduces children golf programme

“As of January next year, the Francistown Golf Club would be inviting young children to train as future golfers,” said Tebogo Toteng, the competition secretary at the club.

He explained that the envisaged programme is part of the club’s plans to establish a well-coordinated golf academy in the country.

He admitted that golf is seen as a restricted sport for the elite and famous where the poor cannot fit. “But we are ready to break the barrier. We want to put a programme where children would always yearn for practicing the game,” he said.

The club is yet to come up with the exact number of children that will be trained in the programme. With the support of the corporate world, Toteng is optimistic that their grassroots vision will translate into a success story.

He said his club has a driving ambition to introduce golf as part of the society in Francistown.

In remarks at the launch of Metropolitan North Golf Day over weekend, Metropolitan Botswana human resource manager, Opelo Kwelagobe said she is pleased that the Francistown Golf Club is paying attention to the development of the game.

“The club’s inclination certainly synergies with efforts of our corporate social responsibility programme,” Kwelagobe said.

“Young people are our future and we must not spare any efforts in investing in them,” he added.

Metropolitan Botswana’s commitment to grassroots development is immense and looks favourably towards a long-term vision because the assurance company’s business of insurance is long term in nature.

Over the years, Metropolitan Botswana sponsored the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF), Confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) Under-20 and the Botswana Primary School Sports Association (BOPSSA) Under-15 championships to name but a few.
