Boxing coaches graduate from AIBA course

The course was held under the aegis of Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) with funds sourced by the Botswana National Olympic Committee from the Olympic Solidarity Funding.

The course attracted coaches from clubs and national teams. It was divided into two levels - AIBA star coaching course level one and level two. Each was attended by eight participants.

The BoBA secretary general, Dirang Thipe said the instructor of the course was Edward Terry from England. Terry is an AIBA instructor and boxing expert who has coached and produced professional boxers and coaches around the world.

Thipe was among the coaches who attended the course, which started last Sunday.

He said the course was meant to resolve the coaching shortage in the country and improve local skills.

“This course was aimed at equipping local coaches with the essential competencies to assist the country to all major events that our boxers take part in them,” he said.

As boxing is growing more especially in schools, Thipe said the course has come at the right time as it will enable coaches to deliever the schools boxing programmes effectively.

He added the BoBA Re Ba Bona Ha programme will be boosted as the graduating coaches would impart knowledge to the young boxers.

“This is a very important course, because from here, we are going to pass the skill to all our boxers at our clubs, including children at our respective schools so that we continue producing the best boxers at a tender age,” Thipe said.

He asserted that despite a shortage of coaches, boxing has been doing exceptionally well recently.

He said BoBA expects the 16 coaching graduates to ensure that they use and share what they have learnt with others to help shape the future of boxing in Botswana and beyond.
