BFA eyes Briton for Zebras job

It is said that the BFA, through its chief executive officer, Keith Masters, has been in touch with the candidate, a former West Ham player with no previous coaching record in Africa.

The Zebras were left without a coach after Tshosane was sacked in October, ending a five-year reign. A search to install his successor began with reports that former coach, Colwyn Rowe was interested in a comeback.

However, sources at Lekidi Centre said his application was tossed into the dustbin. David Bright, also touted as Tshosane’s replacement, was not considered after the association decided to look beyond borders.

The BFA also had its eyes on one national team coach in East Africa, but the mentor has already indicated that he was unavailable. What will hamper the cash-strapped association’s search is the huge salary demands from most foreign coaches.

Most, sources at Lekidi Centre say, will come at an even bigger cost than Tshosane’s P70,000 per month package. The BFA has placed adverts in local and international media for the vacant post.

“We are waiting for people to apply. The advert has been placed all over and we expect a response,” Masters told Mmegi Sport yesterday. He said they do not have a candidate yet.

However, Mmegi Sport can reveal that the association is eyeing the Briton after reaching an agreement that the next candidate should be from outside.

“The NEC decided that the next coach should come from outside. The former West Ham player is available and informal talks have already taken place,” a source said.

The appointment of the new coach will become paramount in the New Year as the Zebras prepare for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
