DT dedicates gong to Zim

DT won an award for Best Ragga over the weekend following the release of his hit song Tote earlier in the year. He has praised his Zimbabwean producer Dr Tawanda Benson and the unheralded Eddie Speaks Mutede for their input in putting together the tune.

DT will perform the track during his four-day visit to Harare into the New Year.

DT and Mutede jointly remixed the popular Mozambique folklore tune, Tote, and gave it incredible dance-hall flair.

“I will give Zimbabweans a blend of my reggae and theirs, which happens to be my inspiration,” he told Showbiz, adding that he will also dedicate his weekend award to his Zimbabwean fans.

“I was elated to win my third BOMU Best Ragga Award and I will give it to Zimbabwe,” said DT.  He has a lot of respect for the Zimbabwean artists he has worked with for Tote.

“I have worked with Dr Tawanda.  The guy is incredibly talented and understands me.  We blend well and we are like dynamite.  Eddie Speaks, who featured in the song, is also from Zim, but he grew up here and in Cape Town.

I think I work comfortably with Zimbabwean musicians and I find peace working with them because of my country of musical inspiration,” DT said.

DT has previously shared the stage with Zimbabwe’s dance-hall pin-up Mic Inity at Redfox in Harare.

Selepeng had gone on a lengthy musical sabbatical before returning with the track Tote earlier this year.  He and Mutede gave the song a modern, youthful touch with the latter doing a bit of rap while DT added his reggae flair.  Their distinctive style blended in so well in the song.

South Africa’s Jimmy Dludlu made the song popular. Mutede savours his link up with the Botswana artist. The two have known each other musically for over a decade.  “We’ve taken that song and thrown in some vibe and good energy.  I love the flow and I am too excited about it,” Mutede previously said.

Meanwhile, DT is also billed to perform in Zambia during the festive season.  He is also pencilled in for another show alongside ATI in for Tonota.
