Love On The Mic in Maun

Poetavango spokesperson, Juby Peacock made assurances that the event comes in an exciting fashion this time around with the theatre inclusion expected to captivate the audience.

The event is centred on the widely celebrated Valentine’s Day and has been dubbed Love On The Mic.

“We have a Valentine’s show to kick off the year.  We will have elements of theatre story telling alongside the poetry this time.  It will be mysterious. We want the audience caught up in the story before they hear the poems,” Peacock told Showbiz.

Legodile ‘Dredd X’ Seganabeng, famed for the poem Bombs, together with Poetavango’s resident poets The Messenger, Prophet Carribean Weed, Mista Poke, King Philosopher and Abbilicious will take turns to entertain the audience.

Peacock, a former Miss Botswana, is convinced theatre presence brings in a whole new dimension to the upcoming event. She said their expectations were that it would be a big show that will set the tone for the year.

Last year, the event saw 10 performers, all Poetavango poets, take to the stage. Peacock said the same poets were preparing for the event.

They believe poetry is a very powerful and direct means of communication and the best way to celebrate love.

Maun has been turned into the home of poetry and the people are always supportive of poetry sessions.

Apart from the Valentine’s Day event, Peacock said they had an exciting calendar of shows for the year. She said their next event after February 14 will be out of the country.

Meanwhile, Poetavango is also planning to adopt the 100,000 Poets For Change concept this year.

Poets from the United States of America and across the globe, gather in a demonstration of poetry to promote serious social, environmental, and political change.

This year the event was dedicated to a 13-year-old boy who was shot seven times and killed by police for carrying a toy gun.
