Girl on the decks! DJ Kabak takes on the male's domain with ease

Although new to the game, Kabak promises to surprise many with her skills.  Having started her journey only last year May, DJ Kabak has proven that she was born to entertain.

But it was not all-smooth sailing to where she is now.

'Most times male Djs work together and invite each other to shows, so chances of seeing a female DJ in an event are almost zero. Even when we do get the chance to play, we have to prove ourselves three times more than male DJs,' she said.

At 22, Matlhodi is already an inspiration to her peers.

She told Showbiz that she earned peer respect because of her hard work and determination. “All the shows I play at, I always make sure that I leave a mark so that they do not forget me when they do other shows in the future. I love being told that I am good, so in order to hear that complement I always make sure I empress,” she said.

The bubbly DJ has a personality that suits her job. Her dress style is catchy and funky. “My dress code is simple although it looks a bit stylish, I love wearing jeans and t-shirts, but I always make sure I make the outfit funky and attractive,” she said.

To stay relevant and on top of the game, Matlhodi is learning how to play the keyboard. “Since I am a soulful DJ, I have decided to learn the skills of playing a keyboard and piano as it goes well with the music I play on my sets. Not only do I want people to fall in love with my work, I also want to leave them begging for more,” she said

Having studied and acquired a certificate in the art of spinning the decks, has also contributed to Matlhodi’s broader knowledge and skills.

“When my interests in being a DJ grew, I heard of a school that offers a course in the art, Ydj Botswana. I went there and learnt all these skills. After my studies, the Ydj team invited me to their tour around the country to show people what we are made of and that is where I found my feet,” she said.

Matlhodi is a third year Environmental science and English student at University of Botswana (UB).

To her, balancing schoolwork with being a DJ work is easy. “I love studying because education is very important and I give my school work the attention it deserves. At the end I want to have something to fall back on in case I do not make it as a DJ, although that is highly impossible,” she said.
