43-year-old man appeared before the Urban Customary court in Bontleng for not paying an outstanding P1,100 balance for a car he had purchased from a friend.
The court heard that Kirodi Shonhiwa, who resides at Mmopane, failed to pay Mooketsi Sebetlela the remaining balance since 2012.
Sebetlela told the court that he sold his car to Shonhiwa in 2011 and he promised to pay the balance but instead paid in small amounts until he stopped in 2012. 'I involved my parents and they kept on asking me if Shonhiwa had paid the balance as he promised so I decided to contact him.
'He then refused to pay me saying that I had complicated issues by including my parents in the issue.
'He told me to seek help wherever I wanted. I decided to take the matter to the police who referred me to the kgotla,' Sebetlela said. He said it was not his intention to take Shonhiwa to court. He wanted to resolve the matter peacefully.
Shonhiwa admitted that he owed Sebetlela the said amount and promised to pay on February 5, 2014.
Kgosi Isaac Monametsi ruled that Shonhiwa pay the money on the date he requested.
He told Shonhiwa if he failed to do so his belongings would be confiscated and auctioned to pay Sebetlela. Monametsi said if Shonhiwa did not have anything of value to be sold he would face a three-month prison sentence.
