BAA throws AGM in doubt

The affiliates say the association should resolve pending issues surrounding two failed attempts to hold an Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) late last year.

The OGM was first abandoned in July because of misunderstandings that arose between leadership and affiliates. The rescheduled December OGM also failed due to financial reasons. Orapa Athletics Club vice chairperson Windy Dintwa questioned how the association could arrange an AGM while there were pending issues.

“An AGM agenda is supposed to be a continuation of that of the OGM,” Dintwa said. He, however, said it was up to the association to do what they deemed appropriate.

“But honestly I do not see how delegates are going to allow that meeting to go on,” he said.

Mmadinare Club chairperson Moses Raphutshi accused the BAA leadership of being irresponsible.

“I hope they have called the AGM as per the constitution demands but believe they have not ignored the pending OGM. If they have completely abandoned the OGM then they would be out of order,” he told Mmegi Sport.

Raphutshi said there is no way they would allow the meeting to continue while some issues are pending. ”Our leadership has trampled the constitution on many instances and this cannot be allowed to go on,” he said.

Maun BDF Athletics Club chairperson Amogelang Masugae argues the AGM is unconstitutional. During the abandoned AGM the Maun club passed a motion of no confidence on the president, Thari Mooketsi.  “There is no way the AGM will continue if Mooketsi does not step down,” he said.

BAA spokesperson Ipolokeng Ramatshaba said delegates had the power to decide what happens at the AGM. He said BAA did not include the issues in the agenda because of logistical issues, but that did not stop delegates from demanding that the issues be discussed if they want to.

He said under normal circumstances the issues would have been included. “If they want the pending matters to be discussed they will be within their own right,” he said.

Meanwhile, the association will host the track and field championships at the UB Stadium on Saturday. Athletes will use the competition in a bid to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
