Few sparkle in My Star

Even the best of the competition, the likes of Obakeng, Khumo and Tshegofatso, did not display their usual class. One particular contestant that deserved credit for giving the show zest was Patricia. In fact, the bubbly vocalist gave the audience reason to be with their excited chants of her name.

The plaudits for the talented young woman who deliberately picked a high-pitched song followed after her display of a more than 45-second stretch without showing any sings of pressure on her vocal cords.  In short she put a signature to Friday’s Botswana Television (Btv) show, My Star, and none of those who came after her came an inch close to drawing the same excitement from the fans.  The judges were left speechless as Patricia revealed her other side proving her powerful prowess beyond imagination.

But a little earlier than her, Boikanyo had also dispersed the worries with an element of surprise.  A very powerful vocalist Boikanyo emerged from the back gate, while fans were waiting to see him come out from the back stage. Taking his time down the stairs towards the judges, the rather timid singer took the crowd along on his musical journey leaving the judges in awe.  He dispersed earlier concerns for what turned out as rather a boring night and firmly put himself on pole position for the crown. Khumo, who had earlier on been saved by the judges after falling into a precarious bottom five position, could not prove her ’saviours’ right.

The irony of Khumo’s saving was that the judges gave her the nod at the expense of one of the most promising singers, Motlha. The judges could not hide their disappoint at her mediocre performance.

Shanty Lo said of her poor showing: “Look we have just lost good singers when we saved you.  We lost Motlha and you cannot afford to put up such a performance.” Peter came onto the stage with a lot of promise but seemed to hold onto something, unable to ravel through and left many into his musical wonderland.

Perhaps out to prove to the judges that they made no mistake saving her ahead of Galaletsang, Tebogo revealed the hip and naughty side of her character and closed the show in lively style.

To cap it all, Kgomotso sent the crowd into stitches of laughter with the ‘Yo man’ hip lingo.
