During a press briefing in Gaborone yesterday, BVF president, Daniel Molaodi said the development will leave the women’s league with nine teams while the men’s competition will be reduced to 13 sides.

He said that though they understand that the teams could be facing financial problems their absence is a cause for concern and they will investigate the matter. Molaodi said that this season teams will use indoor facilities except at the SSKB courts.

He said playing outdoor is a set back for national team players who are forced to adjust to indoor facilities during international competitions.

Mascom chief communications and public relations officer, Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego said it was easy to make a decision on sponsoring volleyball as the BVF is a good partner.  The P3 million sponsorship deal is in its second and last year.

Lebotse-Sebego said because of media coverage of the volleyball league, Mascom has received mileage. She said volleyball is a sport that is doing well as evidenced by the competitiveness of national teams.

She hailed BVF for taking a bold decision to have league games played indoor despite a shortage of facilities. She said that local teams are usually challenged at international competitions when they play in such venues for the first time.

In the men’s competition this weekend, Kalavango go into action with two games against Mafolofolo and Itekeng while Police take on defending champions, BDF VI and Itekeng. In Molepolole, Kutlwano confront Desert Kings and Spiking Stars.

In the women’s league, three matches are lined up in Molepolole. Kutlwano will take on Spiking Stars while BDF VI plays Dynamites as Kalavango and defending champions, Mafolofolo meet in what is expected to be a thriller.
