Starting off on a high note with a dance treatment, the master of ceremony described the performance as an ‘auspicious blessing’ that left the audience impressed. However, it was an eight-year-old girl who stole the dance performer’s thunder when she played three different instruments in one act.
As if this was not enough, a group of Chinese boys and girls later took to the stage to display their art and creative ways of telling a story in another dance and song format.
The highlight of the show came in the rendition of a Michael Jackson classic of We Are The World by a group of boys and girls. They managed to impress the audience with acing the higher pitches of the song. The organiser of the event, Bing Liu, said that the performers are children from the Nanjing Little Red Flower Art Troupe. She said they staged the show as a way of strengthening the Botswana-China relations. Liu explained that they will continue staging more shows for the public as they help bring the two countries together.
“We have so many Chinese people living here and we wanted to entertain them by giving a show that displayed part of our culture and all this was done by the children,” she said.
She added that being in another country can make one feel lonely at times and this was the main reason behind that prompted the show.
“We wanted the Chinese community to feel at home and we also wanted to showcase our culture to Batswana. Judging by the good attendance the event attracted I am sure our mission has been accomplished,” she said.
She added that they decided to showcase for two days so as to accommodate those who missed the Friday show.
“I have been getting positive feedback that we should continue the good work as it is not only entertaining but also educational,” she said The night ended on another high note as the children of Nanjing proved that just as Botswana prides itself in mastering the drum, the Chinese are just as good. The children displayed a well crafted performance on the drums that blew the audience away.
