Although Mmemo has been in the music industry for more than a couple of years, he is confident that 2014 is the year that gospel lovers will get a taste of what he is really made of.
Judging by the attention his single Cazahh has been getting, it is no wonder the 23-year-old is set to take the gospel industry by storm.
The launch, which was well attended, managed to attract lots of gospel lovers and held breathtaking performances from some of the big names in the scene including Matthews Matsetse, Obakeng, One-27, Perfect Imagination, Comper, Boago, TNT Dance Crew, Redeemed, Tha MVP, Matheka, A Re Gopoleng, Bro Sam and Testify.
Mmemo told Showbiz that he is busy working on his first album, which is set to hit the shelves later this year. He added that as a young Christian he decided to be a gospel rapper because he is a true believer of the word of God. “I was raised by Christian parents who taught me the bible at a tender age so growing up I was surrounded by the Word.
For me rap is an opportunity to say or express my faith and share it with the rest of the world,” he said.
Mmemo added that when he writes his songs he makes sure that he relates the word of God with real life situations so that a lot of people with different problems can relate to the music.
“I am aware that gospel music is often used to call people out of sin or as praise and worship, but through rap I make sure I touch areas that even born again people like me can experience and this I achieve by writing songs about heartbreak, being in love or maybe lacking direction. Music should heal situations and not make them worse,” he said.
He said all this is demonstrated in his latest single Cazahh. He added that when creating Cazahh, he had a Ghanaian artist who helped pin the West African touch. He said that it adds ‘spice’ to the song.
“I also featured a woman called Kay to add a feminine voice to it. The song talks about calling people to look at Jesus and surrender their lives to Him as He is the only one who has the power to better situations. It is a dance tune and this will appeal to all music lovers not just gospel,” he said.
Mmemo said that his main aim as an upcoming gospel artist is to point people in the right direction.
“Music plays an important part in our culture and behaviour. Musicians have influenced me when growing up, so I know it can either do good or harm, so I’m here to influence culture for Christ. I want to inject God’s culture not just through my music but through my lifestyle too,” he said.
