Tournament organisers’ spokesperson, Odirile Tamajobe said the competition has grown over the years due to an increase in sponsorship and participants. Tamajobe said by Tuesday, 30 golfers had registered but the actual number will be known on the day of the tournament. He said the event is meant to grow the sport in the mining town, support Phikwe golf club and give Botswana Life customers a chance to interact. He added that customers are given the opportunity to ask any information regarding the company’s products.
“The tournament is a great platform for the company to have a light hearted and enjoyable time with its clients while showing its commitment to the local community,” said Tamajobe, the company’s brains behind the tournament.
He said golfers are always looking forward to the tournament because it is less challenging compared to others. He pointed out that golfers would be teamed up with non-golfers as a way of making them to understand the game. The one-day tournament will be played over 18 holes. The tournament comes after the Dr Kim’s stableford that was held at the same venue a fortnight ago. The Botswana Life tournament’s defending champion is Leatile Mangole of Gaborone Golf Club.
Tamajobe said juniors would use the opportunity to challenge senior players at the event. He observed that the Phikwe Club has good junior players who have been doing well in major tournaments and they are expected to cause an upset on Saturday. Players from Jwaneng, Orapa, Francistown and Gaborone Clubs are expected to travel to Selebi-Phikwe for the competition.
Tamajobe did not reveal the amount of Botswana Life Insurance Company’s sponsorship. He said the company will provide players with merchandise such as golf shirts, balls, caps, food, bottled water and entertainment. Tamajobe said small businesses would be engaged to provide catering and to prepare the course. He noted that the sponsorship increases annually, adding that it is not all about money but to see the sport and the club growing.
