Their latest offering titled Malewa is a mixture of Rhumba, Dancehall and Afro-House, which proves their love for urban African sounds, with heavy drumbeats and piercing lead guitar. Although they have not had a commanding position in the local music industry in recent times, the group, popularly known to churn hits like Phokoje and Re Bina ka Matheka, has remained relevant over the years and continues to headline several music concerts across the country.
Their new songs such as Senza could soon see their songs dominating local music charts yet again, re-affirming them as contemporary music powerhouse.
Although most of the songs lack the catchy melodious attraction synonymous with the group, this is compensated by the heavy drumming and lengthened bass striking which makes them good dance compositions. Tracks such as Prataka, Sakula and Maya could soon be wrestling with other popular songs as club bangers.
The trio should perhaps not have tried to remix Nata Capricorn’s hit song Maya, to produce a House infused tune. The remix has not done justice to the original song. Apart from that imitation of Chinese man “weaving languages together” nothing makes the song interesting. Wizards of the Desert’s shift from hip-hop might have left fans with a penchant for the American sound with a sour taste in their mouths but it is proving to be a revelation for the group as they usher a new era as consistent rhumba hit makers.
