Defending champions, South Africa, who have dominated the competition over the years, retained the title while hosts, Zimbabwe finished second.

Botswana Darts Association (BDA) public relations officer, Motsholathebe Kutoro said although they did not meet their target, there was improvement in the performance of the team.  “Nothing went wrong, we have improved. There was a slight improvement,” he said. He said they missed silver by a few points.

Kutoro said competition was tough but the players worked hard. “They worked very hard.  Even when they lost, it was only because they could not close the game,” he said. Kutoro said the hospitality in Zimbabwe was better many African countries they have visited. He said the only challenge was that the Botswana team played its first match the day it arrived in Harare for the tournament. “We didn’t get rest. We were fatigued,” he said.

The Botswana contingent had three teams - veterans, youth and seniors.

In the open championships, the men’s senior team clinched silver with the women getting bronze.

The veterans and youth teams won bronze each. In the closed tournament, the women’s doubles team of Selma Mokokwe and Batshane Nguune won silver.  In the youth singles, Thato Maphorisa and Teedzani Habana won bronze each.  In the veterans’ category, Mareko Madiso was second.

In the men’s singles open championships, hot shot David ‘China’ Kamanga won gold for Botswana while compatriot, Godiraone Gwalabe got bronze. Botswana clinched two other gold - in the mixed traps through Mareko Madisa and in the doubles through Mokokwe and Batshane Nguane. Other countries that took part in the regional tourney were Namibia, Swaziland and Malawi while Lesotho failed to make it.
