According to Phaf Phafana, one of the organisers of the string of events to be held in Serowe, Mahalapye and Palapye, the reception to the concept has been overwhelming.
“We have realised that nowadays the youth and middle-aged don’t celebrate Independence like they used to in the past, so we came up with the We Bechuana concept. Ever since Batswana heard of it they have been supportive,” he said.
Phafana said that the organisers of BOT50 have shown support for the event and have connected them to some people who can help them succeed in their endeavour.
“We have been approached by one of the leading film production companies in Botswana about shooting several videos about the event leading to the 50th anniversary celebration of Botswana Independence and we embraced the idea. We are going to profile the country from the time of independence until 2015 and release a series of documendocumentaries,” he said, adding that RB2 has already partnered with them in promoting the event.
Phafana added that although the first edition of the show starts in the Central District, it is a national event and is going to be taken to other places in the coming years. The lineup for We Bechuana both in Serowe and Mahalapye includes Ralf Gum from Germany, Rabs Vhafuwi, Problem Child, Da Capo, who are all from South Africa and local lads, Mosako who will perform with a live drummer), Letso who has a trending pantsula song, MMP, Frannix, DJs King, Sly, Crispin, NT Base, Oak, Kaylo, Fondo Fire, Peaz and Shabboo.Interestingly, the show will also feature Serowe’s upcoming DJs Zayne, Franky J, Amstel and Sthethula. A promotional gig featuring all the artists in the lineup except Ralf Gum, will be held in Wamzito Club in Palapye. “In our lineup, we have some foreign artists, which is a move that will help us with the branding of the show. We are confident that our next events won’t need them as the brand would have grown,” said Phafana. He pointed out that We Bechuana concept will be celebrated until Botswana celebrates 50 years of independent rule in 2016.
