The event dubbed Motswako Invasion attracted a relatively fair crowd. Motswako is an African personalised type of hip-hop mostly popular for a mix of Setswana and English lyrics on a steady beat.
The genre gained popularity in the late nineties as more and more acts started rapping in Setswana, resulting in an increased followership from the local population.
During the Friday show the crowd seemed bored, until the South Africans rocked on stage. Mafikeng’s very own Fifi Cooper; the pint sized female rapper was first on stage, followed by Notshi. Notshi has been out of the game and has not released any successful single for over a year, but his songs like My Lady Song and Tswa Daar have managed to remain relevant.
Jumping on stage after the Killah Bee was his mentor, popularly known as Chana Power, Khuli Chana of Mnatebawena fame. Although Khuli Chana is popular amongst local Motswako fans, on Friday he received little attention from the crowd that had flocked the Molapo Piazza.
Wanting to prove to Fifi Cooper that we also have some of the best female MCees locally, the self proclaimed ‘queen of Hip Hop’ Sasa Klaas then took the microphone to dish out some of her singles. Her performances would not be complete without pulling a Nicki Minaj stunt on stage much to the appreciation of the male revellers.
South Africa’s own Motswako originators Mo’Molemi and Tuks took to the stage after Sasa Klass. Although the duo’s latest albums failed to impress they had built a fan base locally with their previous offerings, including their award-winning duet Bona Fela.
Closing off the night, was the Futubolo star Hip Hop Pantsula affectionately known as HHP. HHP’s 30-minute set had the crowd singing along to his every song. The hype from his fans forced the Mafikeng born star to go topless on stage. HHP dished out songs like Wamtseba Motho amongst others.
