Head of Traffic, Assistant Commissioner Katholo Mosimanegape told Mmegi that as from December 1, to December 23 they have recorded a total number of 24 fatal road accidents, which led to 45 people dying. 

“Since beginning of this month until the yesterday (December 23) we have recorded a total of 24 fatal road accidents, which have produced 45 fatalities,” he said. 

The head of traffic also revealed that they have tallied a whopping 1058 general road accidents since beginning of the festive month.

“Out of the 1058 general road accidents we have recorded a total of 97 serious injuries with 217 minor injuries,” he said. 

Mosimanegape further said, “Out of the 24 fatal accidents, six of those have resulted in more than one person dying.” 

Breaking down the statistics, Mosimanegape said on December 4, Mabutsane police recorded one fatal accident in which two people died whilst the following day at Dibete, seven people died after another horrific accident that occurred around 1:30am. 

On December 20, at 9:45am in Pandamatenga six people died on a road accident. Unconfirmed reports say that the accident was caused by a tyre burst that derailed the mini bus off the road. Still on the same day in Thamaga the police received another report of an accident that has left two people dead.

In Palapye at around 1930hrs on the December 21, the police received a report of yet another accident that claimed the lives of three.  On the following day, in Boatle near Ramotswa, six people lost their lives when a minibus was crushed by truck.

The BPS continues to warn motorists to exercise caution on the road.
