Slow start in transfer market

The transfer window opened this week and will close at the end of the month.

Botswana Premier League (BPL) chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi told Mmegi Sport yesterday that there were no confirmed transfers, although clubs are negotiating deals. He said the market is expected to pick momentum in the coming days. He explained that the procedure is that when a club is interested in a player, it must write a letter seeking permission to negotiate with him and that has a waiting period of seven days, which explains the quiet start.

Meanwhile, leading clubs are expected to bolster their squads after getting reports from their technical people on signings.

Gaborone United public relations officer, Kabelo Brown said they are still waiting for the technical team to advise them on the players that they are interested in.

He said the team is fine and the players they have are enough to compete in the second round of the league that kicks off on January 17. Brown said they do not intend to sign many players as their squad will be bolstered by players returning from injury like Tendai Nyamadzawo and goalkeeper, Neo Kenalemang.

“We are also expecting our players who have been on loan at BMC to return because their stay was up to the end of the first round. Players that are on loan are Mpho Kgaswane, Mathews Moruti and Kabo Rasuping,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brown said First Division side, Jwaneng Galaxy has shown interest in Tebogo Sosome.

He said the two sides started negotiations about the player last year but could not come to an agreement. He explained that Sosome is staying in Jwaneng and it could be expensive for him to travel every weekend to Gaborone for matches. Brown said Sosome remains their player and they hope to come to an agreement with Galaxy soon.

Spokesperson of log leaders, Township Rollers, Phempheretlhe Pheto said the technical team met on Monday and would inform the management about player recruitment if need be.

Former Mochudi Centre Chiefs marksman, Jerome Ramatlhakwane is expected to sign for the defending champions while Edwin Moalosi has returned after completing studies in America.

Pheto denied reports that Chiefs captain, Pontsho Moloi may move to Rollers. Another player linked with Rollers is Zimbabwean international, Elvis Meleka who once played for Chiefs. Galaxy FC and Police XI are said to be interested in BMC player, Kenanao ‘Flo’ Kgetholetsile while Orapa United have reportedly snatched Patrick Motsepe from BDF XI.
