The attack occurred on Thursday, the same day Mmegi’s website and archives were wiped out by a hacker who went on to post taunting pictures on the fallen online network.
Attorney Kgosietsile Ngakaagae said the hacking was discovered when employees reported for work on Thursday morning. “Our archives are literally wiped out. We are trying to resuscitate some files from the back-up system. Although we know that we will never be able to recover all of it, we are working with our technical team to find out how we can recover some of the information,” he said.
Ngakaagae said they were in consultation with other law firms to find ways to stem the wave of hackings and ensure such incidents did not reoccur. He stated that in the past six months, the law firm has experienced two burglaries, with one involving the theft of six laptops. “Whoever stole those laptops also tried to take the server but failed. We don’t know who did that and hope in time, we will be able to find out. What worries me is why people wiped us out,” he said.
Ngakaagae added that the incident demonstrated that someone had malicious motives against the firm and wanted to cripple it. “What could those people be benefiting from the information we have? All the files had data on our clients,” he said.
