UB ready to host Intervarsity games

At a press briefing in Gaborone yesterday, the games’ general manager, Raj Rathedi said everything was in place and the institution was ready to play host.

Rathedi said their mission was to host an event of high quality with the resources and facilities they have.

“We take sports seriously and our journey starts here, “ he said.  As defending champions, UB will host the games for the first time since 2011. UB won the competition in Swaziland last year and Rathedi said they intend to defend their title.  He hailed the availability of good players and coaches in the UB team.  Barbara Pansiri,  who is in charge of accommodation said she expects 1,400 delegates in total, 700 from Lesotho and Swaziland.

“We have managed to host our delegates before and we are hopeful we would do that again this year,” she said.

She revealed that they have received support from other local institutions  including  Botswana Public Service College and Botswana College of Agriculture.

She, however, said they were still expecting help from Botswana College of Engineering and Technology and Botswana Police College. She said they would help accommodate other delegates.  Pansiri said off campus students participating in the games would also be accommodated near by.

Mogae Motswaledi, who is in charge of security said they had done their part and they were now ready to host the popular event.  He said they were likely to attract a large number of spectators therefore security would be tight. Motswaledi said Botswana Police Service, UB Protection Services and other private security companies would all be engaged.

He said they have prepared crime tips to show the visitors the crime trends in Botswana so that they can safeguard their property.  Boitekanelo College will assist with an ambulance and a mobile clinic while other local institutions are welcome to take part in the competition as guests.
