Today, the youthful model whose industry name is Abednico forms part of Botswana’s few male models.
“I started modelling while at Maun Senior Secondary School, but my career bloosomed after joining Wizard Walk Modelling Agency upon relocating to Gaborone,” said the 21-year-old Abednico who hails from Mabule.
Abednico said that it was his love for fashion and interacting with people that has prompted him to join modelling although the industry is riddled with infancy challenges in Botswana.
The model said that one of the highlights of his budding modelling career was appearing in the local government sponsored magazine, Kutlwano. Needless to say, the magazine gave him exposure.
“I was supposed to attend a fashion week in Sierra Leone last year, but unfortunately the trip was cancelled due to the Ebola outbreak in the country, which greatly saddened me. It would have been one of my greatest career highlights and I believe that could have given me the exposure that I badly need,” he said.
Currently, Abednico has to do major shows in the pipeline that will see him walking the ramp and he says he is looking forward to that.
Abednico asserted that he was lucky in that his family has always rallied behind him as far as his modelling career is concerned. He said they even support him by helping him financially whenever he has an assignment.
He also said that his best friend, Thapelo Morebodi is always by his side to support him during modelling events.
The young model is currently the face of Ben Dan Photography and Super Fit Gym, which are his loyal sponsors.
Abednico said that he is aware that currently, modelling doesn’t pay much in Botswana as there are not many gigs so he works as an intern at Duma fm where he is doing well as both a newsreader and a presenter.
“I joined Duma FM as a newsreader but the management has given me a show that I host every Saturday which is great indeed,” he said.
He said that working on radio is great because people do not get to see his face and that when he travels using public transport, he some times gets unsolicited feedback about the show.
He pointed out he also gets ideas when he is travelling on public transport.
“I really love radio, but modelling will always be my first love. I have passion for modelling and it gives me a platform for me to interact with people in the industry. I also get to travel and meet people who can potentially help me further my career,” said the young Abednico.
For now, it remains to be seen which career will finally win this versatile young man’s favour.
