The corporation stated that the momentum at which tenants are taking up the scheme necessitated the extension.
The corporation’s marketing manager, Pinky Tau highlighted in an interview that though she could not state the number of tenants who took up the initiative so far, they realise a significant increase every quarter which has led to the extension of the campaign by a year.
Meanwhile, BHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Reginald Motswaiso has encouraged sitting tenants to occupy BHC houses with the intention of owning them, so that the call for home ownership could be realised.
Speaking at the sitting tenants campaign draw here on Saturday, Motswaiso said they have embarked on an exercise to sensitise tenants on the ongoing sitting tenants campaign so that they could purchase houses leased to them.
He said BHC understands very well the importance of home ownership as it is a major investment hence the campaign. He added that purchasing a house enhances accessibility to loans as it can be used as security.
The BHC’s Sitting Tenants Campaign was launched in March 2014 as part of the corporation’s effort to encourage home ownership among Batswana who are leasing BHC properties. “Take this opportunity to purchase the houses and benefit from our reduced prices and complimentary packages such as a building materials voucher of P7 500 to improve the house,” he advised.
Motswaiso added that they intend to conduct the draws every three months as similar draws have been conducted in Francistown, Lobatse and Gaborone. “We realised that our message to tenants to purchase our houses were not satisfactorily reaching our tenants hence we embarked on the campaign. However, there has been an improvement as many tenants are now taking up the scheme. We will continue to spread the message through the campaign,” he said.
First National Bank of Botswana (FNBB) head of sales, Thabo Molefhe said accommodation is one of the basic human rights, adding that the bank is equally committed to home ownership to improve the dignity of the people hence the partnership with BHC on the initiative.
Meanwhile, Benson Gwafila emerged the winner of the P40,000 grand prize in a draw for tenants who bought a house through the campaign. The corporation also presented the fourth quarter draw of amounts of P10, 000 and P5, 000 that went to Kamogelo Ramokate and Wanano Nlumbile, respectively. As one of the campaign partners, FNBB presented a P15,000 voucher for electronic goods and a security systems voucher of P5, 000, to two additional winners as part of their promise for this particular campaign.
