Speaking to Mmegi in the wake of President Ian Khama’s remarks against a troublesome legislator at the BDP congress in Mmadinare over the weekend, Moswaane insisted the president could not have been speaking about him because he did no wrong. Khama had threatened stern action against a certain Member of Parliament (MP) who does not follow the party constitution and was bordering on ill discipline.
While Khama did not mention the name of the MP he accused of indiscipline, many party members at the congress drew an inference that he was referring to Moswaane. Moswaane has been very critical to the party and government in recent months.
He has often times sponsored anti-government motions and even accused the BDP-led government of neglecting the welfare of civil servants early this year.
Even delegates at the congress screamed ‘yo o thuba phathi’ when Moswaane’s name was nominated from the floor to lobby him to contest for the position of additional member at the party’s weekend central committee elections.
This seemed to suggest that party members could have calculated Khama’s statement as an indirect jab towards Moswaane.
Moswaane said that if indeed Khama were referring to him, it would be surprising, as he believes that he has done nothing wrong.
“I believe I have not violated the party constitution in anyway. My allegiance lies with the electorates and I believe I have served them well,” he said. Moswaane insisted that party members should take his criticism (of the party) constructively.
“I love the BDP dearly but I believe that if we have a fault in the party it has to be corrected. It is only that my criticism of the party is misunderstood and not well taken by some at times.”
Moswaane added that he is open to criticism and advice if any party members feel that there is something that he is not doing right.
The MP explained that he is not aware of any party member who is not happy with his approach to things that affect the party and government.
Moswaane has had a very difficult relationship with the BDP under Khama. He quit the party ahead of the 2009 general elections after accusing the party of not listening to his primary election loss appeal. After quitting he accused Khama of being a dictator.
He stood against the party as an independent, and went on to win the Monarch South council seat in the general elections. Afterwards, he rejoined the ruling party.
