Sources close to developments told Mmegi Sport the meeting was divided over South African FIFA presidential candidate, Tokyo Sexwale, expected to rely on Africa’s vote to mount a formidable challenge.

“The challenge is that the president (Tebogo Sebego) is seemingly opposed to us supporting Sexwale. However, the majority of NEC members want him (Sexwale). However, its an exercise in futility as Sebego will have the final say when he casts the vote,” the source said.

The other contentious issue pertained to Francistown region chairperson, Jonas Ikgopoleng’s position in the NEC, after his region was merged with the North West.

“The president had told Ikgopoleng not to be part of the meeting and ordered that he steps out.

But we voted and eight of the members wanted him retained, and the majority prevailed,” the source said.

Ikgopoleng confirmed attending the meeting but referred further questions to Sebego and BFA chief executive officer, Kitso Kemoeng. Both were in separate meetings at press time.

Reports say knives are still out for Sebego who faces an internal rebellion as the BFA prepares for elections next year.

Kemoeng, who joined the association three months ago, faces an uncertain future as the NEC will discuss his future.

Kemoeng is on probation, which ends at the end of the month. He has reportedly had candid confrontations with a certain section of the NEC opposed to Sebego’s rule.

“There was a closed door session where Kemoeng’s contract was discussed. The conduct of the president was discussed, but he was not part of the closed session,” the source continued.

There have been reports some NEC members are preparing to pass a vote of no confidence on Sebego as an ouster plot gains fresh ground ahead of elections expected between July and August next year.
