Cricket teams are ready for the start of the new season

The senior men’s team is preparing for the Southern and Central Region T20 tournament to be held in Malawi in May while the Under 19 team participates in the Division Two Africa World Cup qualifiers.

“Both teams have already started preparations for their respective tournaments. They are both coached by national team coach, Joseph Angara,” the Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) fixtures and publicity secretary, Sumod Damodar said.

He said the reason why the teams had to start preparations early is because they are taking the two tournaments seriously. “Prior to the tournaments, we want to take the teams for friendly matches in countries such as South Africa, Namibia and Nigeria,” he revealed.

The Under 19 side will be fighting for a chance to qualify for the Division One Africa league. The team comprises experienced young players such as Rashaad Mosweu, who have earned national team caps.

Damodar said at the moment the preparations are just training sessions, as they are yet to hold training camps. Currently, the teams are only practising on Sundays as Angara is working on coming up with a training schedule that caters for everyone since most of the players are students while some have full time jobs. Damodar said the national cricket league, which is supposed to start at the end of the month will be key to the national teams’ preparations since the players will be actively involved.
