According to the wing spokesperson, Tshepiso Keitire, even though the hosting Kweneng region had concluded preparations, the congress could not continue because the president is not well.

“The preparations for the congress were concluded. But we had to inform constituencies on Thursday after we realised that the health of our president was not in good state. Again another challenge was Phillip Matante by-election in Francistown South constituency because North East constituencies had indicated that there wouldn’t make it to the congress because they used their resources at the by-elections,” Keitire said.

She said it is not true that her committee was pressed by anyone to postpone the congress.

“We had booked at Bakwena National School. The committee has communicated with the school about the matter. The president of the Women’s league has to give a speech at the congress and how it has been operating together with some of the challenges it has faced,” she said.

The BNFWL president, Violet Chimela said she is critically ill and referred all questions to BNF secretary general Tapiso Kgosikoma.

Kgosikoma confirmed the postponement, saying the party central committee received a letter from the BNFWL on Wednesday stating their intention to postpone the congress.

“They informed us that they are postponing their congress on Wednesday because of their president’s health. The party is only helping the women with finances and logistics but the congress is theirs. They would inform us about the date which they think is suitable for them to hold a congress,” Kgosikoma said.
