Tati East Member of Parliament Samson Moyo Guma, who is also a member of the committee, told the forum that the patient was put on expired drugs for a month. Guma wanted to know the measures the Ministry of Health has in place for such cases.
“The mistake was discovered later when the patient reacted to the expired drugs,” said Guma.
“What do you do after such a discovery and when we (government) are at fault?” he asked. However, for unexplained reasons the accounting officer and permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health, Shaneez El Halabi, did not respond to the question.
Furthermore, PAC chairperson Abram Kesupile proceeded to give the floor to Nata-Gweta legislator Paulson Majaga to ask Halabi questions.
Meanwhile, Nyangabgwe Hospital with about 700 doctors is said to be having acute shortages in the Out-Patient Department where patients can wait up to three hours to access specialists. In addition, Francistown West MP Ignatius Moswaane lamented the shortage of doctors in the Accident & Emergency units, where patients have had to endure prolonged waiting times of up to nine hours.
