Khan, 14, was crowned the overall winner for the pageant with Wedu Sebina, 14, taking the second position. Lekana Baipoledi, 11, was in position 3 in the kids’ category.  They all received crowns and gifts.

Speaking from Russia Little Miss Universe Botswana licenceholder, Tebogo ‘Tebbie’ Lebanna stated that despite being the only African country participating, the young Botswana models found it easy to compete with their international counterparts.

“It was very easy for them to handle the ramp because we have practised for six months.  Although some girls had more experience, ours were super outstanding,” said the excited Lebanna.

She said the judges were impressed by the Setswana cultural elements that the models presented during the pageant.“The culture seems to be loved by the European countries so it was somehow an advantage for us.  They even mentioned that they want to visit Botswana to witness the culture”. Lebanna who was also a judge during the pageant said the judging criteria looked at a number of elements such as walk, talent, smile, confidence and intelligence. Lebanna also won an award dubbed Star of the world ‘Forever’.

“It’s a beautiful experience for our Botswana children to go through such a competition at an early age.  The competition was very tough, so they have learnt a lot and I strongly believe when they get to Miss World and Miss Universe it will be easier for them”.

Botswana’s victory was noticed a week ago after the country topped the online voting polls.  Prior to their departure to Russia, Lebanna had noted that a victory would mean a lot since the country is celebrating 50 years of independence this year.

Wame Baleseng, 15, represented the country last year when she became the second best contestant in the same pageant.  The models are expected to land at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport at 1pm.
