Following the robbery, the police have launched a manhunt for two of the suspects after one of them was arrested shortly after the robbery. Confirming the incident to The Monitor, acting station commander for Mogoditshane Police Station, assistant superintendent Zachariah Tshenyego said the incident occurred around 7.30pm.
He said when the staff was still busy serving customers, the gun-wielding trio moved roughly into the shop and ordered everyone to lie down.
Tshenyego revealed that after making their way into the shop one of the suspects started shooting at the ceiling and ordered the cashiers to open up their tills.
“They managed to collect all of the money that was inside the cash register and rushed out. However, when making their way out members of the public chased after them and helped in the arrest of one, a 38-year-old Motswana,” he said.
Tshenyego stated that even though the employees were shaken, one of them managed to press the panic button alerting the police to respond promptly. He said the police managed to retrieve a loaded pistol from the suspect.
He added that investigations into the matter are ongoing to locate the other two suspects who have vanished into thin air.
“We have launched a manhunt to arrest the two suspects. We are hopeful of locating them soon because the arrested suspect has disclosed their names to the police. We are just glad that no one was hurt during the robbery,” he said.
Tshenyego appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information they may have that could help the police arrest the wanted suspects.
Applauding members of the public for their efforts in helping them arrest one of the suspects, Tshenyego pleaded with them to be cautious at all times, especially when dealing with armed robbers.
“Like in this incident the suspect was armed and it was dangerous for the people who were chasing after him. What if he had decided to fire shots at them, they might have been injured or possibly been shot in the process.”
