The region’s chairman, Barulaganye Moloi told Mmegi Sport that six newly formed teams will take part in the league.

The teams are affiliated to existing men’s teams in Division One and Two. Moloi further stated that though the teams will not be competing for any prize money, it will not discourage them as they have passion for football and are determined to grow in the sport.

“We have not started the sponsorship search yet as we want to provide women with some courses that will enable them to be professional footballers before soliciting for a sponsor,” he said.

He added that the association will register players on behalf of the teams as part of their mobilisation exercise.

He also highlighted that in future they would like to see other teams from villages surrounding the copper/nickel town taking part.

The current six teams, Makanyane, Granada, Red Lions, Tse Tshweu, Maholosa and No Mathata are all from Selebi-Phikwe.

Meanwhile, Moloi indicated that the youth league for Under-15 will run parallel to the women’s league. The chairman indicated that the youth league seeks to encourage youth development at club level, adding the teams will be required to register 15 percent of the young players who graduate from the league.

“In addition we will expect 50 percent of the registered youth players to participate in the league,” he noted.

Furthermore, Moloi expressed concern over the existing gap between the association and the community, saying members of the community are not participating in the region’s football activities.

“We are currently running Re Ba Bona Ha program where children meet every Sunday for training at the stadium but we have no equipment for training.

I therefore implore all stakeholders in our region to come on board and assist us,” he pleaded.
