Selebi-Phikwe Regional Football Association chairman, Barulaganye Moloi told Mmegi Sport the postponement follows a directive from the Botswana Football Association (BFA) that all the league fixtures should be suspended to enable players to freely participate in the 50th Independence activities. He added that the postponement also affects the Under-15 youth league whose aim is to encourage youth development at club level that was supposed to run parallel to the women’s league.

In addition, Moloi said some of the teams in the region would take part in the Independence soccer tournament organised by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture.

“We have decided to use the tournament to empower teams in the lower structures and for this reason we will choose Division One and Two champions for last season to represent other teams,” he said. He however noted that Division One champions, Bobonong Stonebreakers would not be able to take part in the tournament as they will be participating in the independence soccer tournament in their home village, highlighting that the first runner-ups, No Mathata will take their place.

He said Division Two titleholders Red Lions have accepted the invitation.

“This tournament is expected to be an annual event, and we believe that it will encourage competition among teams as it comes with a trophy and prize money. However, we are still yet to meet with the organisers to be briefed about the prize money breakdown,” he said.
