Boxing team ready for Zone VI tourney

An 11-member team to represent the country was also unveiled at the same ceremony. Former boxer, Lechedzani ‘Master’ Luza has been appointed the team’s coach.

The tournament will take place at Botho University from April 23 to 27, this year with 12 countries from the region expected to take part in the event.

The Botswana team has been in camp for some time now and has participated in local tournaments as part of its preparations.

BoBA president, Dr Thato Patlakwe explained that games are qualifiers for  the African Championships and All Africa Games. The two tournaments are also a get way to the World Championship and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  Dr Patlakwe said the Zone IV Championships are every boxer`s dream and present an opportunity for stars to shine. Furthermore, he expressed hope that the Botswana team could perform beyond expectations and be able to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Botswana last hosted the Zone IV Championships in 2013.

The team has Kobamelo Molatlhegi (49kg), Rajab Mahommed (52kg), Tefo Maitewa (56kg), George Molwantwa (56kg), Treasure Moremi (60kg), Pitso Mmopiemang (64kg),Kabo Seitshiro (64kg) and Mmusi Tshwiige (69kg). In the women’s section, there is Lethabo Modukanele (48kg), Keamogetse Kenosi (57kg) and Aratwa Kesemang (60kg).

“The Zone IV has appointed 15 referees and judges who will officiate at the games hence they will get the opportunity to do AIBA(International Boxing Association) Level 2 course scheduled to run from April 22 to 27. Among the list seven are Batswana,” BoBA chairperson, France Mabiletsa said.

 Seven countries out of the invited 12, have confirmed participation. BoBA said it should be in a position to know the exact numbers by end of this week. There will be three sessions of play during the competition days.
