The state alleges that Obakeng Oeme killed Tshomarelo Keitsile at Monarch on October 8. He allegedly suspected Keitsile of cheating him with his girlfriend.
Basupi denied Oeme bail to allow investigations in the matter to continue unhindered.
State prosecutor Inspector Mengistu Chigala had earlier told the court that investigations in the matter are still continuing adding that they fear that the accused may interfere with their investigations if he is granted bail.
Oeme pleaded with the court to grant him bail, promising not to interfere with police investigations.
However, Basupi advised the accused to file his bail application in writing.
According to sources, Keitsile met his painful death after he had accompanied his friend from Selebi-Phikwe to Francistown for the burial of his friend’s mother.
Sources added that in the evening before Keitsile met his tragic fate, he asked for a place to go and bath since there were many people at the homestead of his friend where the funeral was held.
“Someone allegedly called the accused on his mobile phone telling him that his girlfriend was with a stranger at her place. When the accused heard that, he allegedly got into a fury and went to girlfriend’s place. When he got there, he found his girlfriend with the deceased sitting outside the house waiting for someone who was inside the house to finish bathing,” the source said.
The source said without asking, the accused withdrew a knife and started stabbing the deceased several times on his head and body.
Said the sources: “The deceased ran for his dear life, but he later succumbed to the stab wounds at his friend’s place. He was certified dead upon arrival at the hospital”.
Inspector Mengistu Chigala pleaded with Basupi to further remand the accused in custody because police investigations have just started.
He added: “We also fear for the accused’s safety and are yet to record statements from potential witnesses. We fear that he may interfere with our investigations if he is granted bail.”
Oeme is due in court on November 9 for status report.
