The first chance at a goal came in the sixth-minute with Tumisang Orebonye releasing Kabelo Seakanyeng whose shot missed the goal by a whisker. Chiefs who were missing defender, Charles Mutero did not look convincing at the back with GU gaining momentum as the game went on.

The Reds broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Orebonye headed home from Jackson Lesole’s cross to take his season’s goal account to four.

Chiefs missed a chance to level the score with Kaelo Kgaswane putting a telling cross for Dirang Moloi who was too slow and allowed Karabo Phiri to clear in the 44th-minute. GU took a slender one-goal lead into the break.  Chiefs made a change at the start of the second half with Senatla Molefe coming in for Arnold Mampori.

The Reds extended their lead when Mpho Kgaswane tapped from yet another of Lesole’s crosses on the right.

Two minutes later, Orebonye missed a chance to bag a brace with his effort going wide. In the 67th minute, substitute Stanley Ngala received a pass from Lesego Molemogi, but he shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat with Chiefs’ first real chance at a goal.  In the 71st-minute, Thatayaone Ramatlapeng’s low drive hit the upright. Both teams failed to convert their chances and GU pocketed a valuable three points.

“Winning or losing we play the best football in Botswana.

We always dominate the games, unfortunately we play with young players and young players win games while experienced players win championships.

I am proud of my players and their efforts,” GU’s Rodolfo Zapata said after the game. His counterpart, Bongani Mafu of Chiefs lashed out at his players for a dull display.  “Our players did not come to the party. We worked out a plan, but they did not execute. Those are the things that happen when your players are not into the match,” he said.
