The two alleged robbers were found idling around the Main Mall area. The Monitor has been reliably informed the two worked for a popular syndicate around the capital city notorious for stealing cars.
The two men, (names unknown) allegedly stole a Toyota Run X at a home in Mmopane and drove it to the Main Mall to await “instructions on the next move”. The Police who were informed of the plan to steal another car at the Main Mall, then moved in. It is then that the shootout ensued.
The Monitor however, could not establish if the suspects were armed. The only information the publication could get from a highly placed source was that the two were “part of a larger syndicate. They broke into the house in Mmopane through the window and stole the Toyota Run X”.
“They were instructed to wait for further instruction of where to take the car by the Main Mall, but the police managed to intervene,” said the source. One eyewitness, who was the first to arrive at the scene, said that he was at his home nearby when he heard three loud gunshots. “When I got there, I found one person lying down on the ground and he was not moving, whilst the other one was being loaded into the police vehicle maybe being rushed to the hospital,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from the Central police station about the shooting were futile at time of going to press. This is the fifth recorded incident this year, of lives being lost in a police shoot.
