The handyman programme is the money given to schools by the council for minor maintenance of schools. The schools are given P5,000 every financial year. “The problem experienced under this programme is that of accountability for funds on the part of the schools.

The department has nonetheless engaged school heads on numerous occasions to identify possible ways of executing this programme effectively,” Segokgo said last week when addressing councillors.

The chairman said despite school heads having been addressed on the matter, some schools still do not fully adhere to the stipulated guidelines.  He however said during their last meeting of June 2016, the school heads proposed that schools should commit their transactions at the council as it is the case with the agricultural produce.

“The department is still passing the proposal through the relevant structures. If approved, implementation will commence in the next financial year,” he said.  On twinning updates, the SDEC chairman said the office of the Premier in the North West Provincial Government of the Republic of South Africa, invited their council for partnership. He continued: “A round-table business discussion as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MU)was supposed to be done during the meeting which was held from September 21-22, 2016. Unfortunately, the MU was not signed due to administrative logistics”.

Segokgo said the three authorities have agreed that a suitable date and venue for signing of the MU will be set. The North West Province and the SEDC are supposed to agree on cultural exchange, business-to-business relations, people-to-people relations and agricultural exchange.

He said Tshidilamolomo village in South Africa was identified as a pilot project for accelerating economic viability and to stimulate sustainable economic activities in their areas.
