This is the first publishing company to be established in the country. As a publisher it means Modibe will be responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. He will also secure commissions for music and promote existing compositions to recording artists.
“With 15 years in the music industry I have decided to shift my focus from doing events and focus on publishing something which is not being fully practiced locally. I will represent different people in the music industry especially writers and composers. Most people do not know that they have a certain ownership on musical content,” said Modibe.
With the company at its infant stage, Modibe has already signed veteran composer Robert Dargie who has worked on over 500 music productions.
“I will help my clients get their full royalties from COSBOTS. We will also have to calculate to see if these are the proper figures that the artists are supposed to receive. I will be very choosy with who I sign infact I will be the one approaching people not the other way round”.
His partnership with Sheer Publishing means that the South African entity will represent Batswana artists that are signed under Modibe while he will also represent South African artists that are signed to Sheer Publishing this side. The South African publishing company has the likes of Zahara and Cassper Nyovest under them.
Modibe has always been on the forefront when it comes to the music industry business. He also spear heads a project called Botswana International Music Conference which brings music experts from different countries to share their knowledge with local artists.
“The other reason why I have left promoting events is because it’s saturated. There is no money plus there is a lot of backstabbing going on there. I have decided to groom young promoters and let them take over some of the events that I have been working on in the past”.
