Quantity Surveyors Urged To Be Professional

During a stakeholder engagement session held in Gaborone last week, she said as quantity surveyors they should act in a manner consistent with their reputation.

“A quantity surveyor should not make business decisions based on personal feelings, should not advertise misleading information and should always make a record of their service,” she said.

Proctor also noted that in order to register, one has to pass an exam prescribed and approved by the Council. She said they ought to have two years work experience as a quantity surveyor and that they have to be a resident of Botswana. Registration fee is P2,500.

After registering, she said, there would be a registration certificate issued with a registration number. The certificate has to be renewed as it expires annually, and the charge for late renewal is P50 per day for two months.

“Temporary registration fee, especially for members who do not stay in Botswana, is P20,000. Application for registering is P1,500 and if a person is not successful in applying for registration, they will be replied by letter that they have not qualified to register and wait for a period of 12 months before they could re-apply,” Proctor said.

According to the registrar, the benefits of registering with the council are that one keeps abreast with the latest events, as well as getting numerous and different business opportunities. Also, she said, one gets to work towards set standards and that there is public and client assurance.

Outgoing chairman of the QSRC, Gontse Kgosiemang said that as quantity surveyors, they are procurement specialists for construction, who measure quantities, draft construction contracts, control construction costs and risk managers.

The QSRC is a professional regulation body established in terms of Quantity Surveyors Registration Council Act of 2013 to regulate the activities and the conduct of quantity surveyors in Botswana to provide for the regulation of the practice of quantity surveying and for the matter’s incidental thereto.
