Zim diamond dealer appears
Lebogang Baingapi | Tuesday March 28, 2017 16:17
He was arrested over the weekend. The state alleges that Chaganda was found in possession of three diamonds while not being a person exempted or authorised to possess the diamonds.
Prosecutor Gasemotho Pitlagano applied for the charge to be read to the accused and his plea reserved because investigations have just began.
“We make an application for the accused to be remanded in custody because our investigations have just commenced since the accused was arrested over the weekend. Since he is a Zimbabwean, we fear that he may abscond from trial,” said Pitlagano.
On the other hand, Chaganda applied to be given bail saying that he will not interfere with investigations.
“There is no way I could interfere with investigations since I was found with ordinary stones that the prosecution alleges are diamonds. Those are just mere stones that I use at church,” said Chaganda.
Chaganda added that he will not abscond from attending trial since he is working and staying in Gaborone.
“I am also on bail at the High Court for another matter but I did not abscond from attending trial,” said Chaganda.
Basupi acceded to the prosecution’s application and denied Chaganda bail saying that he is a flight risk.
