This comes after initial hosts, Angola failed to organise the regional showpiece. Botswana was supposed to host the games in 2020, but Angola’s withdrawal has meant early involvement for BOTESSA.
BOTESSA public relations officer, Duncan Segabo told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they have received a request from CUCSA to host the games.
He said they are in the process of making submissions to the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) and the Ministry of Tertiary Education to give them permission to host the games.
“We cannot take decisions alone since we fall under different associations and to host the games means lots of resources are needed,” Segabo said. He said they are hoping for a positive response since they believe that hosting the games will bring more positives to the association.
He said if Botswana turns down the request, CUCSA will be forced to beg the next hosting member to organise the games.
However, Segabo said during the annual general meeting held in Gaborone last month, BNSC chief executive officer, Falcon Sedimo said CUCSA should consider Botswana for hosting the games since it brings positive impact to the nation and its centrality to other member states.
Segabo said Sedimo’s statement had encouraged them to host the competition. Segabo added the association is ready to host the games even though it was not their turn. This will be the second time Botswana hosts the games.
Meanwhile, Segabo said their wish is to respond to CUCSA as soon as the BNSC gives them feedback to enable other countries time to prepare for the games.
CUCSA has 10 members drawn from the Southern African region being Botswana, Angola, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland, Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia.
