Toyota maintains consumer popularity

According to the recent registration figures aggregated by Statistics Botswana (SB), Toyota contributed 42.7% of the total 10,876 vehicles registered for the first time during the quarter under review.
Of the total 4,640 Toyotas registered for the first time, 3,671 were passenger cars, while vans, trucks, minibuses, motorcycles, and others accounted for 395, 248, 318, three, and five respectively.
The total number of vehicles registered constituted 26.9%, which was a decrease from 14,868 recorded in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Honda was the second favourite make, as it recorded 1,413 of first registrations, accounting for 13%. For Daewoo, figures showed that vehicles of this make were not registered just like in the previous quarter. Massey Ferguson was the favourite make of tractors contributing 41.2% of the total tractors registered for the first time during this quarter. The majority of the trailers that were registered this quarter were home-made, which was 43.8% of the total registered trailers.
Passenger cars constituted 74.6% of the total first registrations. However there was a decrease of 27.1% in passenger cars registered for the first time when compared to the fourth quarter of 2016.
Only 27 motorcycles were registered this quarter, which was 0.2% of the total first registrations.
Most of the first registrations done in the quarter under review were used vehicles, which was 81% of the total first registrations. Only 0.2% were re-built and 18.8% brand new. Passenger cars contributed 84.4% of the used vehicles.
The highest number of registrations was of vehicles from Japan, which was 70.9% of the total first registrations. Out of these vehicles, 99.2% were used, with only 0.7% and 0.1% being brand new and re-built respectively. Japan was followed by South Africa with 19.4%, while imports from Singapore made 3.9%.
Most of the vehicles from South Africa (81.2%) were brand new, which was 84% of the total brand new vehicles registered this quarter.
Gaborone registered 4,723 first registrations, which is 43.3% of total first registrations. Mogoditshane followed with 28.8% of the vehicles registered for the first time. Compared to the previous quarter, Q4
2016, both stations registered a decrease in the number of first registrations. For Gaborone, this was a decline of 24.9% while for Mogoditshane it was a decrease of 29.8%. As with the last quarter, no vehicles were registered in Hukuntsi and Tsabong. First registrations that were done in Shakawe and Gumare were of passenger cars only.
