The ensemble is representing the country at the event, which is New York City’s longest running public festival. The ensemble left for the United States of America (USA) yesterday for the weeklong festival. They have also collaborated with the ILove Botswana Ensemble for the tour.

“Mophato Dance Theatre has been invited to represent Botswana at the Battery Dance International Festival in New York. The festival attracts an audience of 10,000 and hosts more than 10 countries across the world this year. Botswana is the only African country invited as well as the first African country to be honoured with a day, that will be covered by the New York Times,” said the Mophato Dance Theater publicity team.

The dance ensemble has already been featured in the New York Times publication in a preview article that spoke about the event.

“The dance company promises to represent Botswana well and generate positive Travel Destination Image to fly the flag.”

The Battery Dance International Festival was established to connect dance ensembles across the world. It will see Mophato Dance Theatre sharing the stage with renowned dance ensembles from across the world such as Martha Graham and Battery Dance.

American choreographers such as Michelle Dorrance, Paul Taylor, Mary Anthony, Elizabeth Streb and Darrell Moultrie have all presented their works alongside pre-eminent companies around the world.

The festival will also have workshops that will be conducted by different experts from Broadway.

Mophato Dance Theatre has continued to represent the country through dance on an international platform. They have previously staged performances around the region and in Europe with the guidance of their leader, Andrew Kola.
