Enga, who is the North West District Council (NWDC) chairperson and Maun Administrative Authority deputy chairperson, Vepaune Moreti were in June expelled by the BDP for defying party caucus by contesting the council positions. The BCP president, Dumelang Saleshando and his Botswana National Front (BNF) counterpart, Duma Boko, who is also the leader of the coalition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), will welcome the two councillors on November 4. Other speakers at the star rally will include Kenny Kapinga and Goretetse Kekgonegile. The rally will be used to launch other new members.
Kekgonegile, the BCP North West regional chairperson, confirmed that Enga and Moreti have joined the BCP. He told Mmegi that the two will be launched by Saleshando and Boko next weekend. The star rally, he said, will also be to kickstart the UDC 2019 general election campaign in the Ngamiland.
Before his expulsion, Enga had indicated his ambition to take on MP Konstantinos Markus in the party’s primaries in the Maun East constituency. However after joining BCP, Enga’s focus seems to have shifted from Kekgonegile’s constituency of Maun East, to the other side, Maun West.
The departure of MP Tawana Moremi has furthermore opened up the constituency for aspirants. Enga told Mmegi that he qualifies to contest the Maun West. He however insisted that it was up to his new political home, the BCP to decide. Further adding to the speculation, Enga said in the 2009 elections he contested the Sedie ward council seat in Maun West under the BDP card and lost the ward to Kaokapita Kaokapita of BNF.
Already singing praises to the new recruit, Kekgonegile described Enga as a quality leader saying he would boost BCP stature in Ngamiland.
Kekgonegile rubbished suggestions that BCP was planning to deploy him to Ngami constituency to give way for BCP president, Saleshando to contest Maun East. “My interest has always been Maun West. There are no plans for our president to contest here,” said the former trade unionist.
He said before the BMD problems surfaced there was a deadlock in wards allocation. He said deadlocked wards were in Ngami; Tsau Sehitwa- Kareng, Xangwa and Bothatogo wards. BCP apparently did not want to give away all these Ngami constituency council wards while BNF wanted Xangwa and Bothatogo wards.
He said in Maun West, Shashe ward was contested by BCP and BMD. In Maun East, Xhabara, Boseja South and Thamalakane North were contested by BMD and BCP.
