UDC to contest by-election with new symbol

The new symbol is a royal blue umbrella enclosed in a circle of the same colour, with the party name written underneath.
The new symbol was approved this week by the IEC. UDC will use the new symbol at Tshimoyapula ward by-election and in the 2019 general elections.
In a letter dated August 28, 2017 written on behalf of IEC secretary Motlapele Raleru says: “You are duly informed that the symbol is accepted by the Independent Electoral Commission. You are requested to provide soft copy of the symbol in an audio compact disc in jpeg format”.
UDC spokesperson, Moeti Mohwasa said the approval of the symbol is a good development for the party.
“There is a possibility that the new symbol might be used at the Tshimoyapula by-election. We had submitted the symbol in a soft copy as per the IEC requirement,” Mohwasa said. He however said UDC will be represented by Mdala Mdala for the Tshimoyapula by-election.
“The party members have agreed on a compromise candidate who is Mdala Mdala. The party had nothing to do with the issue of compromise. It was up to members because they want to try all their best for the party to win the by election. I believe we can still do better on that side,” he said.
Yesterday the Botswana Democratic Party branch committee for Serowe North constituency was conducting vetting on the members who have shown interest to contest the by-election. Mmegi has learnt that only four people have applied to the branch committee to show interest in the primaries.
“The date for primaries will be announced this week after the committee has finished its vetting process. After vetting, the branch will announce the names of people who are eligible to contest,” branch chairperson for Serowe North Baratiwa Matheothe said yesterday in an interview. He confirmed that four people have shown interest to contest the primaries.
