The IRC is a report that illustrates the state of engineering infrastructure in a country, providing a collective opinion provided by engineers in the manner of expert witness, on the current condition and performance of the country’s infrastructure.
Responding to BusinessWeek enquiries this week BIE president, Oagile Kanyeto said the IRC seeks to ensure that appropriate advice can be given as regards to operation, maintenance, repair, or replacing of the infrastructure.
“In this way, the best results can be attained from our infrastructure throughout its service life.
This will lead to economic prosperity, as well as improve public health and safety,” he said. As a first step to the establishment of the IRC, the Institution has been conducting panel discussions and other activities as a way of engaging its members on engineering issues and how they impact the nation as a whole.
“We believe that by July 2018 we will have enough information that we can put together in a report form,” Kanyeto said.
He added that the BIE should be able to report and engage constructively on engineering issues and activity in the country, as well as give advice to government and the public for the benefit of the country.
According to Kanyeto, the institution views this as its responsibility and duty and that the main challenge has all along been the lack of regulation of the engineering profession.
“With regulation in place, it becomes much easier for the profession to be organised and allow the institution to play the role of a professional body,” he said.
He also noted that the challenges that BIE have with regard to the engineering infrastructure would be best articulated in the report, backed by empirical evidence.
