Ten percent for Phikwe miners

The agreement, which takes effect next month, is a considerable compromise on the 20 percent the union membership had initially petitioned for, instructing the branch committee not to accept any down-scaling below 15 percent in negotiations.

The union had 'gauged' their demands on the improved prices for copper/nickel on the world market.

A member of the BCL management negotiating team, Joseph Lisindi, described the agreement as a milestone that would lead to improved relations between the two parties.
'The management (has) discovered that BCL and the union were both working towards the same denominator, that is representing the employees. We are partners in the process of representing the welfare of the employees,' he said.
