Mmidi-Phuduhudu admits defeat over mayoral seat

In an interview with Mmegi this week, Mmidi-Phuduhudu said that she had showed interest in contesting for the mayoral seat only to be informed that Matlhogonolo was also eyeing the position.

She however said that she feels that Matlhogonolo deserves the position.  Mmidi-Phuduhudu pointed out that Matlhogonolo could have got the position in 2009 but unfortunately things did not go as planned. She further said that she did not have a problem with the party's decision and she had even voted for Matlhogonolo during the mayoral elections.

'Matlhogonolo has informed us that he will not be contesting in the coming general elections so I still have a chance. We are giving him an opportunity to bid politics farewell in style. He is one of the experienced councillors that we have,' she said, adding that she expects the mayor to work closely with his councillors.  Mmidi-Phuduhudu ruled out the possibility of peace ever reigning in the Selebi-Phikwe Town Council. She explained that the main problem is that both the opposition parties (Botswana Congress Party and Botswana Movement for Democracy) and the ruling BDP have the same number of councillors and when it comes to agreeing over something, one camp is often left disgruntled.  She further said that despite all the infighting between the councillors, other council structures such as committees have been functioning properly.

Mmidi-Phuduhudu hinted that if she does not stand for the general elections she will continue working within the party structures in the region.  This brings to two the number of councillors in Selebi-Phikwe who have indicated that they do not have interest in contesting for the 2014 elections.  The other is former mayor Lekang Mukokomani of the BCP who disclosed end of last year that he will not be standing for elections.
