First division sponsorship launch postponed again

A recent announcement by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) indicated that the sponsorship would be launched on March 19. The date has passed and it has now emerged the event will be on April 9. The sponsorship was reportedly secured last year from diamond giant, Debswana and was initially supposed to be launched at the beginning of the season.

Details of the breakdown of the sponsorship are yet to be revealed. Recently eight clubs in the First Division South threatened to boycott league games unless a clear explanation is given about the sponsorship. However, things calmed down after the intervention of BFA president Tebogo Sebego, the league secretary, Sidney Magagane has said. 'The president addressed us recently and assured us that Debswana was still on board and from that, we are confident that before the end of the season, it would be launched,' Magagane told Mmegi SportSo far, details of the sponsorship still remains a secret. Magagane said these can only be revealed during the launch.

'The person who was supposed to launch the sponsorship is reported to be abroad, hence the latest postponement and we know the teams are eager to know how the money would be spent but I do not have such details,' he said. The three-year, P6 million deal covers both the North and South leagues with each region getting P1 million per season.
